PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS REPORT

We have entered a golden age of private sector companies sharing their proprietary economic data for the public good. In the face of unprecedented threats to official U.S. statistical agencies, policy makers, business leaders, and the public rely on this data more than ever before.

Private sector economic data can only be a completement to gold standard federal statistics, rather than a substitute. By virtue of being collected in the course of ordinary business, private sector data avoid the declining response rates in traditional surveys, but often have significant biases or gaps in coverage that are not visible in real time. I believe it is best to use a “wisdom of the crowds” approach, aggregating data from a variety of different sources.

That’s why I created the Epic Econ Private Sector Jobs Report - a monthly report synthesizing labor market data from a variety of different sources, including ADP, Revelio Labs, and Indeed to provide a comprehensive and timely view of the U.S. labor market. I also produce estimates of small business employment (<50 workers) using additional data from Gusto, Intuit, and Paychex, which I share on LinkedIn.

The report is published monthly on my Epic Econ newsletter. Past versions are linked below. The February 2026 report will be published on March 5th. Small business employment estimates are published as soon as all included data are available.
